2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport: Second Generation with Striking Design, Powerful Engine, and Premium Cabin

Volkswagen has introduced the fully redesigned 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. Transitioning into its second generation on the updated MQB Evo architecture, the five-seat version retains its sportier character while becoming noticeably more modern, luxurious, and technologically advanced. Vehicle production is established at Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Dynamic and Elegant Exterior

The new Atlas Cross Sport looks sleeker and more refined compared to its predecessor. The body retains the same wheelbase as the three-row Atlas, but features a rear overhang shortened by 5.4 inches and a greenhouse shortened by 2.1 inches. The windshield has a bit more rake, and the roofline sports a striking, athletic silhouette.

Lighting and Front End: The vehicle features a more squared-off hood. It includes stacked LED headlights with separated daytime running lights and an illuminated VW badge on most trims.

Profile and Rear Section: The flanks are smoother and trade the prominent bulging character line for a much more subtle one. The tailgate now sits nearly flush with the rear bumper, and a full-width taillight design mirrors the front lighting treatment.

Wheels and Colors: The base model rides on 18-inch wheels, while upper trims feature 20- and 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Three new exterior colors join the lineup: Dark Sage Metallic, Blackberry Metallic, and Sandstone.

A Considerably Upgraded Interior

Inside, Volkswagen has taken a more premium approach. The dashboard features a large architectural loop running across the cockpit and is rimmed with real wood, incorporating soft-touch materials, contrasting stitching, and ambient lighting.

Materials and Colors: Three interior color schemes are available: Pebble Grey, Black, and Medium Brown. Leatherette is standard on entry-level models, while higher trims feature Varenna leather or Nappa leather.

Seat Comfort: Every model receives a revised 12-way driver's seat with improved four-way lumbar support. Upper trims add thigh support and improved full-back massage functionality for both the driver and front passenger.

Ergonomics: The shifter has been moved up to the steering column to free up space on the center console. This space houses cupholders, a dual wireless charging system with Qi2 and magnetic phone grippers, and the Driver Experience Dial which controls volume, drive modes, and ambient lighting.

Practicality: Inside door-release handles feature a mechanical pull-up action located on the front of the door armrests. Rear side windows come standard with pull-up sunshades.

Advanced Technologies

The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport receives a substantial technology upgrade:

Screens: A 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument cluster is standard across the board. The base model features a 12.9-inch infotainment display, while roughly 90 percent of the lineup gets a 15.0-inch screen.

Audio: Base versions feature a nine-speaker audio system, while the top trim offers a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.

More Power and Efficiency

Under the hood is the latest version of Volkswagen's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (the EVO5 version of the EA888). It employs the Miller cycle and a variable-geometry turbocharger.

Specifications: The engine produces 282 horsepower, representing a 13-hp increase. It delivers 258 pound-feet of torque.

Transmission: It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission featuring Tiptronic manual shifting.

Drive System: Front-wheel drive is standard, and Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system is available across the lineup.

Efficiency: Fuel economy is expected to increase by roughly 2 mpg, yielding around 25 mpg combined for FWD and 23 mpg for AWD models. The towing capacity remains 5,000 pounds when equipped with a factory-installed trailer hitch.

Trims and Availability

The Cross Sport will be sold in SE, SE Tech, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line trims. Pricing has not yet been announced and will be revealed ahead of its market launch. While the regular Atlas goes on sale in October, the Atlas Cross Sport will arrive at dealerships in early 2027.
