Mercedes-AMG is continuing to globally restructure its model lineup. To make room for a new generation of four-door EVs, the corporation discontinued classic internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles—specifically, the legendary CLS sedan and previous versions of the AMG 4-Door GT. Positioning and Range: A Step Back in Power, a Step Forward in Range

Numbers aside, there’s some simulated trickery involved. While the more powerful versions mimic a V8 soundtrack, the new GT 53 delivers inline-six noise, specifically the soundtrack of the old AMG E53 Coupe with its turbocharged 3.0-liter engine. We’re told it’s an “authentically reproduced combustion engine sound,” one that’s meant to deliver a “goosebump factor.”

Dropping the three-motor setup in favor of a pair of electric motors still results in impressive performance figures.

  • Performance and Power: The GT 53 develops a peak output of 536 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. Accelerating to 60 mph (96 km/h) takes 3.8 seconds, and its top speed is electronically capped at 143 mph (230 km/h). At the same time, it's important to note the difference between peak power and the continuous output of the dual motors, which stands at a lower 362 hp.
  • Drivetrain: Thanks to independently controlled electric motors, the car automatically switches between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive depending on road conditions.

Key Features: ICE Simulation and "Fake" Gears

Because electric cars are naturally quiet and lack a stepped transmission, AMG engineers went to unusual lengths to preserve the familiar driving emotions of a sports car.

  • Authentic Sound of a Non-Existent Engine: To ensure drivers don't feel like they're steering a silent trolleybus, the cabin broadcasts the sound of an inline-six engine. To achieve this, Mercedes-AMG specialists recorded the actual exhaust note of an old AMG E53 coupe using 16 microphones (making over 100 measurements both in motion and stationary) to recreate an authentic soundtrack for a "goosebump factor."
  • Simulated Gear Shifts: In Sport+ mode, drivers can use the steering-wheel paddle shifters to switch through "virtual" gears. The car simulates shifts and engine rev changes, creating a full illusion of driving a traditional gasoline vehicle.

Market Outlook and Pricing

The novelty's future raises skepticism not only among automotive journalists but also within the company itself.

  • Price: Even the base version in its home market of Germany carries a hefty price tag—pricing for the GT 53 starts at €115,430. For comparison, the higher-end trims go far beyond reason: the GT 55 is priced at €154,700, and the GT 63 costs €196,350.
  • Market Skepticism: Due to high prices and mixed perceptions of such "electric gasoline simulations," experts doubt high demand. Reports that a top company executive allegedly called the car something that "shouldn't even exist" highlight Mercedes' internal doubts regarding the project's commercial success.
